BY JULESNextMount Everest

Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular treks in Nepal, and for a good reason. Not only do travelers get up close and personal with the highest mountain in the world, but they also have an incredible adventure on their way to the final destination. The opportunities for adventure, incredible views, and immersing yourself in rich culture are endless.

Flight to Lukla

Your Everest experience will begin with an adrenaline-filled flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. The short 40-minute flight will treat you to incredible views of the Eastern Himalayas, and you will watch the landscape change from urban areas to green hills to some of the highest mountains in the world. Be prepared to feel your heart rate increase as you land. Lukla airport is situated on the top of a cliff with a massive drop at the end of the runway, and many people find this to be one of the most exciting parts of the trek.

Sagarmatha National Park

UNESCO World Heritage Site Sagarmatha National Park offers jaw-dropping views of various peaks in addition to being home to several endangered species, including musk deer, snow leopards, yaks, Himalayan goral, and others. The plant life is also impressive, varying from dense bamboo forests to think pine trees before you travel above the tree line. The park will expose you to some of the most incredible landscapes in the world, all while on your way to Everest Base Camp.

Namche Bazaar

The Everest Base Camp Trek will take you through the beautiful town of Namche Bazaar, also frequently referred to as the “Gateway to the Himalayas in Nepal.” While historically, the town was part of a trade route between Nepal and Tibet where salt, dried meat, and textiles were exchanged, it is now often filled with trekkers. Here, you will be treated to views of Kongdi Ri, Thamserku, and even Everest. Namche Bazaar is an excellent place for trekkers to acclimate, meaning you will be able to spend at least a few days here.

Sherpa Culture

The Khumbu region is believed to have the largest population of Sherpas in the world, which means you will be learning a lot about this group of people. Sherpas are known for their ability to climb mountains and hills while carrying extraordinary loads, as their ancestors have survived in these mountains for generations. While stereotypes are often not true, you will find that the Sherpa people are brave, adventurous, and extremely kind. You will not find interactions such as these anywhere else in the world.

Sunrise at Kala Patthar

The morning after you arrive at Everest Base Camp, you will hike up to Kala Patthar at 5644 meters. Here, you will watch the sunrise over Mount Everest. There will also be stunning views of Nuptse, Changtse, and Lhotse. This view is possibly one of the most special you will experience on any trek in Nepal.

Incredible views of Mount Everest (and surrounding peaks)

While the main highlight of the Everest Base Camp trek is obviously seeing Mount Everest, this trek offers some of the best views of the Khumbu region, unlike anything you have ever seen. You will spend the entire journey in the presence of the Everest range, which includes Lhotse, Cho You, Ama Dablam, and many others. Additionally, the Khumbu Icefall will be in your view as you arrive at base camp. Staring up at a blue sky, pierced by snow-capped Everest and others, is a sight you surely will not forget anytime soon.

Meet people who have summited Everest and other like-minded adventurers

Many of the guides, porters, and locals you meet along the way may have summited Everest once or many times. They will surely have incredible stories of their adventure, in addition to immense knowledge of the area, culture, and mountains. Additionally, there will surely be other travelers along the route who you will bump into frequently and likely chat with. People from all around the globe come to Nepal to experience the adventure of this trek, meaning there will be many people for you to share your own adventures with and maybe find ideas for your next one.

Conclusion

Everest Base Camp is one of the most incredible adventures that you could embark on. Not only will you get up-close-and-personal with the world’s highest mountain, but you will experience the flight of a lifetime, extraordinary nature, welcoming cultures, historic towns, and meet friends who will last for a lifetime.
