When to go

The climate is temperate, often windy, with summer heat tempered by Atlantic breezes. Winter (June-September) is damp; temperatures average 10-16°C, but can sometimes fall to freezing. Summer (December-March) temperatures average 21-27°C. There is always some wind and the nights are relatively cool. The rainfall, with prolonged wet periods in July/August, averages about 1,200 mm at Montevideo and some 250 more in the north, but the amount varies yearly.

Most tourists visit during the summer, which is also high season, when prices rise and hotels and transport need advance bookings. Seasonal variations for Montevideo and Punta del Este are given on pages and . In the low season on the coast many places close.
