Festivals and events


At any given time of the year there'll be a festival somewhere in Peru, drawing people from miles around.


January

Marinera
festival, Trujillo. An opportunity to see Marinera dancers.


February/March/April

In the first week of Feb, the Fiesta of the
Virgen de la Candelaria
 takes place along the shores of Lake Titicaca near the Bolivian border and features dance groups from around the region. Carnaval is held over the weekend before Ash Wednesday, and
Semana Santa
(Holy Week), which ends on Easter Sunday. Carnaval is celebrated in most of the Andes and Semana Santa throughout Peru. Accommodation and transport is heavily booked and prices rise considerably. Book tickets and make hotel bookings early.


May
 

Fiesta de la Cruz
 on 1 May is held over much of the central and southern highlands and on the coast.


June


Andinismo
, Huaraz, a week-long festival held at the beginning of the month.In Cuzco, the entire month is one huge fiesta, culminating in
Inti Raymi

. One of Peru's prime tourist attractions. This date is also celebrated for
San Juan
in the jungle lowlands. On 29 Jun
