Avoid touts at bus stations offering rooms and tours, some can be quite aggressive and often slander other hostels. Do not let them put you off your choice of lodging and try to ring in advance to confirm your booking. Unless otherwise stated, all hotels listed are recommended.

Mountain bikingThe Callejón de Huaylas offers superb variety for mountain bikers, from one-day routes to popular attractions to longer trails through agricultural land, over bridges and into traditional villages. More demanding are the routes over the Cordillera Negra to the Pacific coast and, toughest of the lot, the energy- sapping, highly exhilarating climbs over 5000-m passes beneath the snow peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. A typical circuit is Huaraz-Recuay-Chavín-Huari-San Luis- Chacas-Punta Olímpica, which lasts two days; or returning through Quebrada Llanganuco, lasting 6 days.
