Northern Jungle

From the heights of the Andes down to the Amazonian lowlands a road runs to Pucallpa, the second city of this region of Peru. It passes through the Huallaga Valley, not the safest part of the country owing to the narcotics trade, but if you stick to the main route you should be OK. From Pucallpa and Yurimaguas, further north, you can venture into the jungle if you want to continue beyond, the only way is to spend several days in a boat, getting to know the rivers and their traffic.

Standing on the banks of the Amazon itself, the city of Iquitos still retains something of a frontier feel. It became famous during the rubber boom of the late 19th century and is now the main tourist attraction in this part of the country. For jungle visits there are many lodges to choose from and two fine protected areas, Pacaya-Samiria and Allpahuayo-Mishana.
