Road and river

The main road links to the north are at El Guasaule and further inland on the Pan-American Highway at Las Manos with a third option at the border north of Somoto at El Espino in Honduras. Crossing the border to Costa Rica in the south, the most commonly used crossing is at Peñas Blancas, although it is also possible to leave from San Carlos for Los Chiles, connecting with Fortuna and Lake Arenal.

In San Carlos there is an immigration post linking with the boat journey on the Río Frío connecting to Los Chiles in Costa Rica. There is no official border crossing between San Juan del Norte and Costa Rica.
