Tuxtla Gutiérrez and around

Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the state capital, of Chiapas, is perhaps not the prettiest of cities - modern, sprawling and hectic - but it still makes for a good base, particularly for visiting nearby Chiapa de Corzo and the Sumidero Canyon, the latter a definite must-see when in the area. The centre of town is fairly compact and easy to get around. Tuxtla is also a good transport hub for buses and domestic flights, making it easy to reach other parts of Chiapas and the rest of Mexico from here. Sumidero Canyon, a spectacular 1-km-deep canyon on the Grijalva River, reached by boat from
Chiapa de Corzo, is only a short bus journey away.
