Mexico City to Oaxaca

The express toll road from Mexico City to Oaxaca first runs generally eastwards to Puebla , where it turns south to wind through wooded mountains at altitudes of 1500-1800 m, emerging at last into the warm, red-earth Oaxaca valley. It has been described as a stunning bus ride along a new motorway through cactus-filled valleys and plains. The route described here, however, avoids the new motorway in favour of the less sophisticated but equally attractive Route 190, which continues from Oaxaca to Tehuantepec. The road, although paved throughout and in good condition, serpentines over the sierras and is quite beautiful. The alternative coastal route is also very attractive and of special interest to visitors who wish to engage in the many water sports available. Buses on the new express toll road now take six hours from Mexico City to Oaxaca.
