San Pedro Sula to Copán

The Western Highway runs parallel to the border from San Pedro Sula southwest along the Río Chamelecón to Canoa (58 km), from where there is a paved road south to Santa Bárbara (a further 53 km). Continuing along the Western Highway, the road from Canoa towards Guatemala runs southwest to La Entrada (115 km from San Pedro), where it forks again left for Santa Rosa and right for an attractive 60-km road through deep green scenery to Copán Ruinas.

The regular bus is recommended rather than the dangerous minibus service, which can be a bit hair-raising. The road is paved throughout and in good condition.

La Entrada
is a hot, dusty town and the place to change buses. Going south takes you to Santa Rosa and towards El Salvador, west to Copán and Guatemala.

El Puente
, is a national archaeological park reached by taking a turn-off, 4.5 km west from La Entrada on the Copán road, then turning right on a well-signposted, paved road 6 km to the visitor centre. It is near the confluence of the Chamelecón and Chinamito rivers and is thought to have been a regional centre between AD 600 and 900.
