Copán Ruinas

A charming town set in the hills just to the east of the border with Guatemala, Copán Ruinas - to give the town its full name - thrives and survives on visitors passing through to visit the nearby ruins. Nevertheless, it is arguably the best-preserved and one of the most pleasant towns in Honduras. Close to the border with Guatemala, it's a good place to stop for a few days before heading straight to San Pedro Sula (172 km) and the Bay Islands or Tegucigalpa (395 km), with the impressive ruins of Copán, good attractions, coffee plantation tours, hiking, caving, hot springs, horseback riding, language schools and volunteer opportunities.

The
Museo Copán
, on the town square has good explanations in Spanish of the Maya empire and stelae. There is a good selection of artefacts, a burial site and a tomb that was unearthed during a road-building project. It is a good idea to visit the museum before the ruins.
Casa K'inich
. The completely restored Old Cuartel now houses the Casa K'inich Interactive Children's Museum, an interesting museum for everyone, not just for kids, and in a nice spot with great views of the town.
Enchanted Wings Butterfly House
, is run by Bob 'The Butterfly Guy' Gallardo, specialist in Honduran butterflies. The garden, complete with restaurant, is beautiful and has exhibits of rare butterflies, an orchid garden and birdwatching tours can be arranged. Recommended.
