The Northeast

Through the agricultural and cattle lands of Olancho State, a road runs near to the Parque Nacional Sierra de Agalta and beyond to Trujillo on the Caribbean coast. To the west, accessible only by air or sea, is the Mosquitia coast - a vast expanse of rivers and swamps, coastal lagoons and tropical forests filled with wildlife but with few people. From February to May you can taste the vino de coyol, which is extracted from a palm (a hole is made at the top of the trunk and the sap that flows out is drunk neat). With sugar added it ferments and becomes alcoholic (chicha); it is so strong it is called patada de burro (mule kick).
