Reserva Nacional y Natural Montecristo

A mountain track from Metapán gives access to El Salvador's last remaining cloud forest, where there is an abundance of protected wildlife. It now forms part of El Trifinio, or the International Biosphere 'La Fraternidad', administered jointly by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Near the top of
Cerro Montecristo
(2418 m), which is the point where the three borders meet, there is an
orchid garden
with over 100 species (the best time to see them in flower is early spring), an orchard and a camping ground in the forest. The views are stunning, as is the change seen in flora and fauna with the altitude. This highest elevated part is closed for visitors during the mating and reproduction season of the animals (31 May to 31 October).
