Western El Salvador

Compact and with good transport links, Western El Salvador combines the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Cerro Verde, Volcán Izalco and Lago de Coatepeque - essential for any visitor to the country - with the serene beauty and majesty of countless waterfalls and the colourful Ruta de las Flores around Sonsonate. Little indigenous villages and pre-Columbian ruins contrast with the vibrancy of Santa Ana, El Salvador's second largest city. Three routes lead to Guatemala, the northernmost passing close to the impressive cloud forests of Parque Nacional Montecristo on the border with Honduras.
