Around Quito

Despite Quito's bustling big city atmosphere, it is surrounded by pretty and surprisingly tranquil countryside, with many opportunities for day excursions as well as longer trips. A combination of city and interparroquial buses and pickup trucks will get you to most destinations. Excursions are also offered by Quito tour operators. The monument on the equator, the country's best-known tourist site, is just a few minutes away; there are nature reserves, craft-producing towns, excellent thermal swimming pools, walking and climbing routes and a scenic train ride. To the west of Quito on the slopes of Pichincha is a region of spectacular natural beauty with many crystal-clear rivers and waterfalls, worth taking several days to explore. Visit www.pichincha.gov.ec for attractions near Quito.
