North to Colombia

To the north of Ibarra is a land of striking contrasts. Deep eroded canyons and warm subtropical valleys stand side by side with windswept
páramos
and potato fields. The highlight of this area is Reserva Ecológica El Angel, home of the largest stand of frailejones (large velvety leaved plants) in Ecuador. The main city in the region is Tulcán, about 5 km south of the Colombian border. Ecuador's best soccer players and cyclists come from this area.
