Guayaquil to Peru

From a traveller's point of view, the area south of Guayaquil to the border with Peru offers some of the best and worst in Ecuador. Here are the lovely and seldom visited Uplands of El Oro, a tranquil backwater with friendly people, a fresh climate and great scenery. This pleasant hill country has forests and waterfalls, as well as the charming colonial town of Zaruma.

On the downside, the sweltering unsafe coastal city of Machala has little to recommend it and nearby beaches are dirty. The border crossing at Huaquillas is likewise hot, frantic and unsafe. Unless you are headed to the Peruvian beaches by Máncora, you are better off using one of the other, more tranquil, border crossings to Peru.
