Working in Ecuador

Ecuadoreans have traditionally welcomed outsiders warmly, although a certain cultural barrier was always noticeable, especially in the highlands and even more so among indigenous communities. Growing numbers of foreign residents, however, some of whom have shown remarkably little sensitivity toward the local population, now threaten to breed anti-gringo sentiment.

Volunteering

'Voluntourism' is very popular in Ecuador, attracting many visitors, from students to retirees. It is a good way to become more intimately acquainted with the country (blemishes and all) and, at the same time, to try and lend a hand to its people. If you are seriously interested in volunteering, you should research both local and international organizations well before you leave home. Try to choose a position which matches your individual skills. Think carefully about the kind of work that you would find most satisfying but remember that you may also be assigned menial tasks. Likewise be realistic about how much you might be able to achieve. The shorter your stay, the more limited should be your expectations in all regards. One month is a reasonable minimum. You must speak at least basic Spanish, and preferably a good deal more, in order to work effectively in a local community setting.

You always have to pay your own airfare, and generally also contribute toward your room and board. There are many different areas where voluntary work is possible, of which we list but a few. Many nature reserves in and around
Mindo
