History of Cuba
The history of Cuba is characterised by one key
theme: the struggle for freedom. Beginning with the pre-Colombian civilisations
which resisted the Spanish conquest, the goal of freedom was taken up by
landowners seeking independence from Spain in the 1800s, by Nationalists
looking to curb U.S. influence in the early 20th Century, and by
revolutionaries seeking to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of General
Batista in the 1950s. Reading about the turbulent history of this island will
help you understand modern Cuba, from the crumbling buildings of Havana to the
beautifully preserved vintage cars prowling the streets.
