Ins and outs

Getting there

There is an international airport outside Santa Clara which receives mostly charter
flights
from Canada in season, otherwise you fly to Havana or Varadero and transfer from there overland. Santa Clara is on the main east-west highway from Havana to Santiago and communications by land are excellent, with frequent
buses
in both directions. Direct buses run daily to Cienfuegos from Havana, continuing to Trinidad, or you can get to Trinidad from Varadero via Santa Clara and Sancti Spíritus. There is also a daily service Trinidad-Santiago de Cuba, with several stops along the way. Santa Clara and Cienfuegos can be reached by train
from Havana, but Trinidad is not on the main line and only a tourist service operates from here.

Tourist information

Tour agencies such as
Cubatur
,
Cubanacán and Havanatur can be found in all the main towns and operate as tourist information offices although their main purpose is to sell tours. They can help with hotel reservations, tickets and transfers.

Best time to visit

If you enjoy watersports and festivals related to the sea, then March is a good time to go to Cienfuegos. May is busy in Santa Clara, where there are film, music and dance festivals, but the best time is around 28 December, when the populace celebrate the end of the Revolution and the Plaza de la Revolución is alive with revellers enjoying a concert. The week leading up to Chrismas Eve is the time to be in Remedios, when the
parrandas
are in full swing, and September is ceremonial in Trinidad, with followers of Catholicism and
Santería
joining parades through the streets in honour of the Virgen del Cobre, patron saint of Cuba, whose day is 8 September.
