Ins and outs

Getting there

Air

There are international airports north of Ciego de Avila, on Cayo Coco (Jardines del Rey), Las Tunas and Camagüey, and a domestic airport near Playa Santa Lucía. Charter flights from Canada, Argentina and the UK bring visitors to the cays.

Rail

The three provincial capitals are linked by rail and road, being on the main routes from Havana to Santiago de Cuba. Trains are unreliable and some services are not available to foreigners.

Road

Víazul
has a good daily bus service either from Havana, Varadero or Trinidad to Holguín or Santiago, stopping at all major towns along the way.

Tourist information

State tour agencies can be found in all the main towns and at hotels in the beach resorts and these operate as tourist information offices although their main purpose is to sell tours. They can help with hotel reservations, tickets and transfers.

Best time to visit

You will find plenty of wet weather if you come here between June and November, with most of the rain falling in the three months at the end of that period when there is also a significant hurricane risk. The area was badly hit in 2008 by hurricanes which impacted seriously on farming and food supplies. Snow birds come in the winter months to the north-coast beaches but there can be rough seas bringing weed and debris from November to February if there is a cold front further north. Generally the driest time of year is between December and April. There are several cultural events in Ciego de Avila worth a look if you are in the area at the right time, including the International Book Fair in February/March, the Piña Colada Music Festival in April, the Carnival of Flowers in the second half of May and the market for Arte Popular in the second half of November.
