South to San Isidro

From San José, Highway 2 (Pan-American) heads southeast towards Cartago, veering south of the city and beginning the steep ascent through switchbacks, with only clouds and heavily laden trucks for company as you climb to the continental divide at almost 2050 m. Accommodation is dotted along the road although signposting - as in much of the country - is not necessarily a reliable indication of direction. In general hotels advertise their location in relation to kilometres from San José. While kilometre markers are erratic, the system does work, even if it does occasionally mean getting involved in advanced algebra as you try to work out precisely where you are.
