Golfito and the Osa Peninsula

The Osa Peninsula is the smaller of Costa Rica's two Pacific protuberances and while broadly similar in shape, the land- scape could hardly be more different. All lush, verdant tropical exuberance - Corcovado National Park is the place to visit in Costa Rica if you're looking for a rainforest wilderness experience. On the western side of the peninsula, Corcovado makes you work for your pleasure and requires a demanding trek which you can do on your own or as part of a group. Beyond rainforest hikes, there's kayaking, diving and surfing on offer at several points around the peninsula, including the budget option of Puerto Jiménez or the more comfortable base of Bahía Drake.

On the mainland, the regional centre of Golfito is an important town, flourishing as a tax-free trade centre and the stepping-off point for beaches around the Golfo Dulce to the north and south. Heading south it's increasingly remote. Zancudo is a fine beach and base for chilling out and some of the best deep-sea fishing in the country, while Pavones further south still provides the ultimate surf experience with one of the longest lefts in the world.

All around the gulf and the peninsula, hotels and lodges hide in exclusive bays basking in comfortable temperatures for much of the year.
