Turrialba and around

A lively local shopping hub that has expanded to fill the flood plains of the Río Turrialba, the otherwise forgettable town of Turrialba (population 33,411) appears in the spotlight not through its own merits but rather by a collection of associations. With the Reventazón and Pacuare rivers nearby, the town is the Costa Rican centre for whitewater rafting and kayaking, it's the nearest place of any size to the Guayabo National Monument archaeological site, the world famous CATIE tropical research station is just down the road, and Volcán Turrialba National Park offers a quiet, high-altitude hike for those who like to walk to the top of a volcano instead of driving.
