South to Cahuita
Reserva Biológica Hitoy Cerere
From Penshurst, a road heads inland climbing the Estrella Valley, eventually arriving at Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve. The 9950-ha reserve has some of the greatest wildlife diversity in Costa Rica, a fact that has created an interest in natural remedies from the park's flora. The reserve also offers some tough day-hikes.
Rainfall in the park is a steady 3.5 m a year, with temperatures in the mid to high 20s creating perfect conditions for wet and premontane tropical forest. Three basic trails lead from the rangers' station through the spectacular forest rich with epiphytes and many streams, rivers and waterfalls. Wildlife is profuse, with sloths, howler and white-faced monkeys to be seen. On the ground you may see otters, peccarys, and even jaguars and tapirs. Over a hundred birds have been spotted in the park.
