Medellín

Medellín, capital of Antioquia Department, is a dynamic, contemporary city, considered by many to be the engine of Colombia. Previously the home and headquarters of notorious narco-trafficker Pablo Escobar, Medellín has since shaken off its association with drugs and violence in what is one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Latin America. Medellín is now a fresh, vibrant and prosperous city known for its progressive social politics, art, culture and partying. It is one of the main industrial cities of Colombia, and paisas are known for their canny business sense as well as the pride they take in their city. In the centre, the new has driven out much of the old and few colonial buildings remain. However, large new buildings must, by law, incorporate modern works of art which, together with plazas and parks that feature monuments and sculptures, makes for an interesting walking tour. Music and arts festivals attract many visitors and the flower festival, the Desfile de Silleteros, in August, is the most spectacular parade in Colombia. Known as ´The City of Eternal Spring´, Medellín has a pleasant, temperate climate; warm during the day and cool in the evening.
