Around Cartagena

Cartagena is surrounded on almost all sides by water and travellers will be drawn to the city's sparkling Caribbean coast. Islas del Rosario are glistening examples of what a tropical paradise should look like, and for those on a budget there is Playa Blanca on the Barú peninsula. To the northeast of Cartagena, the coastline is characterized by
ciénagas
(mangrove swamps), such as the Ciénaga La Caimanera, which provide plenty of opportunities to observe the wildlife that subsists in
these remarkable ecosystems. A few kilometres further on is the Volcán del Totumo, an extraordinary
crater-like mud hole where bathers can wallow before washing off in the nearby
ciénaga
.
