Elqui Valley

A dramatic cleft in the heart of the mountains, the Elqui Valley is home to two of the north's most important cities, Coquimbo and La Serena. Inland, you will find star-filled nights lit up by shooting stars, pisco distilleries and villages in the mountains. The valley of the Río Elqui is one of the most attractive oases in this part of Chile. There are mines, orchards and vineyards set against imposing arid mountains. The contrast between the immense rock formations and the lush valley floor is overwhelming.

Getting there

The cities of Coquimbo and La Serena are easily reached by countless buses from both north and south, from any one of more than 10 companies. Several flights daily from Santiago to Copiapó, Antofagasta and Iquique stop off at La Serena.

Getting around

La Serena and Coquimbo are linked by buses that pass down Avenida Francisco de Aguirre in La Serena before travelling along the Pan-American Highway. Taxis are plentiful and cheap.
