The Seven Lakes

This group of lakes, situated south of Lago Villarrica, provides a beautiful necklace of water, surrounded by thick woods and with views of distant snows giving a picture-postcard backdrop. Six of the lakes lie in Chile, with the seventh, Lago Lácar, in Argentina. After the final peace settlement of 1882 the area around these lakes was reserved for Mapuche settlements. Lago Riñihue is most easily reached from Valdivia and Los Lagos and is dealt with in a later section . Most of the lakes have black-sand beaches, although in spring, as the water level rises, these can all but disappear.
