Copiapó Valley

From Vallenar it is 148 km north to Copiapó, the largest city in the valley of the Río Copiapó, generally regarded as the southern limit of the Atacama Desert. This valley is a surprisingly green cleft of farms, vineyards and orchards in the desert, about 150 km long.

Getting there

The Copiapó Valley's main centre is Copiapó, which is easily reached by regular buses from both north and south. There are several daily flights serving Copiapó from Santiago and La Serena, continuing on to El Salvador.

Getting around

There are many
colectivos
and public buses in Copiapó, which may be useful for those heading for some of the out-of-town sites, such as the Santuario de la Candelaria.
