Central Valley

Shutterstock/26853172/Nicholas SandbomThe Central Valley is the heart of Chile. Stretching from just north of Santiago south to the Río Biobío, this wonderful region climbs from secluded tracks and beaches along the coast to the high Andes in the east, with the fertile valley itself in between.

On clear days, the snowy mountains can easily be seen from the coast, across the woods, fields and vineyards of Chile's agricultural heartland. It is here that the most enduring images of Chilean village life can be found:
huasos
(cowboys) with their long spurs, green valleys speckled with grazing horses and whitewashed houses in colonial style, hinting at that bygone age before cars and motorbikes sounded the death knell for the horse.
