Tobago is not as bustling as Trinidad but the island is ideal for people in search of relaxation. The tourist area is concentrated on the southwest end and about six miles from the capital, Scarborough. There are small hotels and guesthouses scattered all around the island, however, offering peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings. The forest on the central hills is quite wild and provides a spectacular backdrop for the many horseshoe bays around the coast and there is good walking, birdwatching, sailing and diving. Tobago is 26 miles long and only nine miles wide, about the same size as Barbados, but with only a fifth of the population and a tiny fraction of the number of tourists. It is shaped like a cigar with a central 18-mile ridge of hills in the north (the Main Ridge, highest point 1890 ft), running parallel with the coast. These northeast hills are of volcanic origin and the southwest is flat or undulating and coralline. The population is concentrated in the west part of the island around Scarborough. The climate is generally cooler and drier, particularly in the southwest, than most parts of Trinidad.

Ins and outs

There is a good ferry service and air shuttle from Trinidad, while many international flights come direct to Tobago. Many hotels are within walking distance of the airport and close to the beach. Scarborough is only 15-25 minutes' drive from Crown Point Airport and small enough to walk around, but for trips to the suburbs or further afield take a route taxi or hire a car. If you are driving around Tobago, maps are available from the tourist offices at the airport and at the port.
