British Virgin Islands

Shutterstock/18864571/Andrea HaaseThe British Virgin Islands have a reputation for excellent sailing between the islands and there are many charter companies offering crewed or bareboat yachts. Windsurfing is also top quality and both sports organize races and regattas which attract competitors of international standard. Races are accompanied by lots of parties and related activities typical of the yachtie fraternity. There are plenty of hotels, and a few really special places in isolated spots - popular with newly weds or the seriously rich. While there are some luxury, sizable resorts in the BVI, there are no high-rise hotels or casinos, and very few nightclubs. In fact, there is very little to do at all on land and nearly everything happens in the beautiful water which surrounds the islands.

If you are keen on watersports and sailing and have adequate finances (the Virgin Islands are not cheap), you will enjoy island hopping around Sir Francis Drake Channel. Tortola is the main island where most people live. Road Town is the capital, a small town around a busy harbour with marinas, jetties and inter-island transport, while there are also communities with docks and ferries at East End and West End which attract restaurants and a lively nightlife. The best beaches run around the north shore, where there are bays and inlets for mooring yachts. The other island with a sizable population is Virgin Gorda, site of the huge boulders known as the Baths and home to a number of luxury hotels and yacht havens. Some of the other islands are so small that they are occupied by a single resort or a single villa, the height of exclusivity, bolt holes for the celebrity rich.
