Towards Boa Vista in Brazil
The road that connects Manaus and Boa Vista (a ferry crosses the Rio Branco at Caracaraí) is fully paved and regularly maintained. There are service stations with toilets and camping sites every 150-180 km; all petrol is low octane. At Km 100 is
Presidente Figueiredo
, with many waterfalls and a famous cave with bats. There are also shops and a restaurant. About 100 km further on is a service station at the entrance to the
Uaimiri Atroari Indian Reserve
, which straddles the road for about 120 km. Private cars and trucks are not allowed to enter the reserve between sunset and sunrise, but buses are exempt from this regulation. Nobody is allowed to stop within the reserve at any time. At the northern entrance to the reserve there are toilets and a place to hang your hammock (usually crowded with truckers overnight). At Km 327 is the village of
Vila Colina
where
Restaurante Paulista
is clean with good food, and you can use the shower and hang your hammock. At Km 359 there is a monument to mark the
equator
. At Km 434 is the clean and pleasant
Restaurant Goaio
. Just south of Km 500 is
Bar Restaurante D'Jonas
, a good place to eat; you can also camp or sling a hammock. Beyond here, large tracts of forest have been destroyed for settlement, but already many homes have been abandoned.
