Guajará-Mirim in Brazil

From Porto Velho, the paved BR-364 continues 220 km southwest to
Abunã
(with a few cheap hotels), where the BR-425 branches south to Guajará-Mirim. About 9 km east of Abunã is a ferry crossing over the Rio Madeira, where it receives the waters of the Rio Abunã. The BR-425 is a fair road, partly paved, which uses the former rail bridges. It is sometimes closed from March to May. Across the Mamoré from Guajará-Mirim is the Bolivian town of
Guayaramerín
, which is connected by road to Riberalta, from where there are air services to other Bolivian cities.

Guajará-Mirim is a charming town. The
Museu Municipal
, at the old Guajará-Mirim railway station beside the ferry landing, is interesting, diverse, and recommended. An ancient stern wheeler plies the Guaporé. Return trips of 1250 km, taking 26 days, can be made from Guajará-Mirim to Vila Bela in Mato Grosso; the fare includes food.

Guayaramerín (Bolivia)

The Bolivian town of Guayaramerín is a cheerful, prosperous little place, on the bank of the Río Mamoré. It has an important
Zona Libre
. There are flights to Trinidad, La Paz, Cobija, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, as well as buses to La Paz, Santa Cruz, Trinidad, Cobija and other destinations, but the roads are in poor shape and appalling in the wet season. Boats sail to Trinidad.
