Excursions from Manaus in Brazil

Manacapuru

This typical Amazon market town is situated on the Solimões river, 110 km west of Manaus. It has three basic hotels and
Il Maccarone
pizzeria (Avenida Eduardo Ribeiro 1000). It is 84 km by road  on the AM-070. Around 25 km from Manaus is the
Piranha Lake Sustainable Development Reserve
, comprising a series of lakes and protecting large areas of
varzea
forest, dotted with gigantic trees such as sumaumeira. The area is a refuge for migratory birds and a breeding ground for many endemic herons, storks, egrets and ducks. There is excellent sport fishing.

Mamori

This village on the Rio Mamori has plenty of wildlife close at hand, and canoes can be hired to spot animals from the river. Many of the jungle lodges lie a little upstream on the Rio Mamori, around Lago Mamori. There is malaria in this area . To get here, take bus No 11 from the Manaus
rodoviária
in the direction of Castanho.

Arquipélago de Anavilhanas

This filigree of more than 350 brilliant-green islands in the jet-black Rio Negro - some fringed with white-sand beaches, others anchored only by their roots - is one of the area's must-see sights. The scene is particularly beautiful at the end of the day when the sky looks vast and warm and the light on the trunks of the partially submerged trees is a thick orange-yellow. Birds fly into the Anavilhanas to roost and millions of bats leave for their night hunt. The air is silent but for bird calls, the lapping of the river and the bluster of river dolphins surfacing for air. The islands are 80 km upstream of Manaus. Several companies arrange visits to the archipelago as can most of the Rio Negro lodges. Rio Negro safari cruises almost all visit the Anavilhanas.
