West of Jardins in Sao Paulo, Brazil
Vila Madalena and Pinheiros
Cidade Universitária, on the university campus is one of the most popular tourist attractions in São Paulo. The snakes are milked for their poison six times a day and the antidotes made from the venom have greatly reduced deaths from snakebite in Brazil. The centre also deals with spider and scorpion venom, has a small hospital and is a biomedical research institute. Visitors are not likely to see the venom being milked, but there is a museum of poisonous animals, which is well organized and educational, with explanations in Portuguese and English. To get there from Praça da República take the bus marked 'Butantã' or 'Cidade Universitária' (Nos 701U or 792U) along Avenida Paulista, and ask to be let out at Instituto Butantã.
,a racecourse in the Cidade Jardim area. Race meetings are held on Monday, Thursday and on weekends. The racecourse is easily accessible by bus from Praça da República.
Vila Madalena and neighbouring Pinheiros are São Paulo's East Village, Notting Hill or Prenzelauerburg. Streets are crammed with bars, restaurants and an array of the city's freshest designer labels, clambering over the steep hills and buzzing with young and arty middle class Paulistanos. Rhythms pound out of myriad music venues, and the area attracts the rich and famous: Seu Jorge lives and drinks in Vila Madalena, as does leading avant garde musician, Max de Castro.
