East of Jardins in Sao Paulo, Brazil

night before his famous Cry of Ipiranga, 'Independence or Death', which declared Brazil's separation from Portugal . At the time when Independence was declared, Ipiranga was outside the city's boundaries, in an area where bricks were made, on the main trade route between Santos and São Paulo.

Museu Paulista

is housed in a huge palace at the top of the park. The original building, later altered, was the first monument to Independence. The museum contains old maps, traditional furniture, collections of old coins, religious art and rare documents, and has a department of indigenous ethnology. Behind the museum is the
Horto Botânico/Ipiranga Botanical Garden
Jardim Francês
, designed as a garden for plant study, now a recreational area. There is a light and sound show on Brazilian history in the park on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. To get there, take either bus (Ipiranga-Pompéia for return) from Ana Rosa, or from the Praça da República.
