Barra de Santo Antônio and Maragogi in Brazil
There are many interesting stopping points along the coast between Maceió and Recife. At Paripueira, a 40-minute bus ride from the rodoviária in Maceió, the beach is busy only during high season; low tide leaves lots of natural swimming pools.
Barra de Santo AntônioSome 45 km north of Maceió is this busy fishing village, with a palm-fringed beach on a narrow peninsula, a canoe ride away. The beaches nearby are beautiful: to the south, near the village of Santa Luzia, are
Tabuba
and
Sonho Verde
. To the north is
Carro Quebrado
, from where you can take a beach buggy to
Pedra do Cebola
, or further to
Praia do Morro
, just before the mouth of the Rio Camaragibe.
Unlike many of the resorts just to the north (such as Porto de Galinhas), this little beach town has preserved its local character. Outside the high season, when the Maragogi gets crowded, life goes on pretty much as it has done before tourists began to arrive in the 1980s. And yet the beach is glorious: a seemingly infinite stretch of broad, fine sand washed by a turquoise sea. Some 6 km offshore, a fringing reef reveals a series of deep swimming pools at low tide. The current is rich with sergeant majors and wrasse and with the occasional visiting turtle. Trips out there are easy to organize.
Ins and outsFrom Maceió there are two buses a day and frequent
combis
and shared taxis to Maragogi.
Combis
leave from the Maxi service station (Maxi
posto
) at Cruz de Almas on the BR-101 highway in Maraju on the northern outskirts of Maceió city. There are also two buses daily from Recife; or take a bus to São José da Coroa Grande, and take a
combi
from there.
Beyond Maragogi, a coastal road, unpaved in parts, runs to the Pernambuco border and
São José da Coroa Grande
. The main highway, BR-101, heads inland from Maceió before crossing the state border to Palmares.
