Paraíba coast, Tambaba and Campina in Brazil

The Paraíba coastline has 117 km of beautiful beaches and coves, surrounded by cliffs and coconut groves. These are among the least developed of the northeast.

Tambaba

The best-known beach of the state is Tambaba, the only official nudist beach of the northeast and one of only two in Brazil. It is located 49 km south of João Pessoa in a lovely setting: the green ocean, warm water, natural pools for swimming formed by the rocks, cliffs up to 20 m high full of caves, palms and lush vegetation. Two coves make up this famous beach: in the first bathing-suits are optional, while the second one is only for nudists. Strict rules of conduct are enforced, unaccompanied men are not allowed in this area and any inappropriate behaviour is reason enough to be asked to leave. The only infrastructure is one bar, where meals are available.

Access is from
Jacumã
, via the BR-101, 20 km south from João Pessoa to where the PB-018 goes 3 km east to Conde and continues 11 km to the beach of Jacumã; from here a dirt road goes 12 km south to Tambaba. Buses run hourly to Jacumã from the João Pessoa
rodoviária
. In summer, dune buggies can be hired at Jacumã to go to Tambaba.

Between Jacumã and Tambaba are several good beaches such as
Tabatinga
, which has many summer homes built on the cliffs, and
Coqueirinho
, which is surrounded by pleasant vegetation, and is good for bathing, surfing and exploring caves. There are plenty of cheap and mid-range
pousadas
at both and a very good seafood restaurant at Coqueirinho,
Canyon de Coqueirinho
, on the beach. Near the border with Pernambuco is the 10-km long beach of
Pitimbu
.

Campina and around

The best beaches of northern Paraíba are in the vicinity of the fishing village of
Campina
; although there is little infrastructure in this area, the shore is worth a visit. Access is via a turnoff to the east at Km 73.5 of the BR-101, 42 km north of João Pessoa. It is 28 km along a dirt road (PB-025) to Praia Campina, with a wide beach of fine sand, palms and hills in the background. Nearly 3 km south is
Praia do Oiteiro
, in which the white sand stands out in contrast with the multicoloured cliffs and calm blue ocean. About 2 km north of Campina is
Barra do Mamanguape
, where
Ibama
runs a preservation centre for marine manatee.

Some 85 km from João Pessoa is
Baia da Traição
, a fishing village and access point for a number of beaches. Its name means 'Bay of Betrayal' and refers to the massacre of 500 residents of a sugar plantation in the 16th century. There is a reserve near town where wood and string crafts are made by the local indigenous people; an annual festival,
Festa do Toré
, takes place on 19 April. Fisherman offer boat tours to the area's less accessible beaches.
Barra de Camaratuba
,
17 km north of Baia da Traição, is a popular surfing beach.
