Tres Corações in Brazil
A group of popular spas are easily reached by road from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Most of the hydro resorts lie south of the Dutra Highway (BR-381, Belo Horizonte-São Paulo). These are Cambuquirá, Lambari, São Lourenço and Caxambu, south of the town of Três Corações, which also gives access to the centre of São Tomé das Letras. Further west and north, on the Minas/São Paulo border is the much larger resort of Poços de Caldas. Some 240 km southwest of Belo is the huge lake formed by the Furnas Dam. It can be seen from the BR-381 road to São Paulo.
Tres CoraçõesThe modern city of Tres Corações is a convenient place for making connections to the spas but is desperately uninteresting. It is, however, the birthplace of Pelé, the legendary football star, to whom there is a statue in Praça Coronel José Martins.
The
rodoviária
is beside the old railway station where a steam engine is on show (the railway is used but there is no passenger traffic). At Avenida Getúlio Vargas 154 is the
Casa de Cultura Godofredo Rangel
(Departamento de Turismo e Cultura and Library).
Praça Odilon
, on Rua de Andrade, has a post office and
Banco do Brasil
(but no exchange facilities). From Praça Martins, Avenida Julião Arbex leads steeply uphill to a statue of Christ on top of a chapel on Praça Monsehnor Fonseca.
