Cambuquirá, Lambari, São Lourenço & Caxambu in Brazil

Cambuquirá

Some 20 km south of Três Corações by paved road, Cambuquirá's
Parque das Águas
is a hilly town with a pleasant atmosphere. Horse-drawn taxis ferry visitors around. Nearby
fazendas
sell
cachaça
.

Lambari

This is another hilly town, 27 km south of Cambuquirá. The
Parque das Águas
, has seven mineral springs and mineral water swimming pools on Praça Conselheiro João Lisboa. There are boat trips on the
Lago Guanabara
and to
Ilha dos Amores
. The resort has a casino.

São Lourenço

São Lourenço, 60 km southeast of Lambari, is easily accessible from Rio de Janeiro (five or six hours by bus) or São Paulo (six or seven hours by bus), and is useful as a junction but is fairly dull in its own right. There is a splendid park with tennis, boating, swimming, a flying field and fishing. Its rich mineral waters are used in the treatment of various medical complaints. The famous carbo-gaseous baths are unique in South America and can be found at
Parque das Águas
.

Caxambu

The waters at Caxambu, 31 km northeast of São Lourenço, are used for treating stomach, kidney and bladder diseases, and are said to restore fertility. The waters seemed to work for Princess Isabel, daughter of Dom Pedro II, who produced three sons after a visit. The little church of
Santa Isabel da Hungária
(1868) stands on a hill as a thanks offering. The surrounding mountains and forests are very beautiful and there is a view over the city from
Morro Caxambu
, 1010 m.
