Tourist information
The
Ministério do Turismo
, Esplanada dos Ministérios, Bloco U, 2nd and 3rd floors, Brasília, www.turismo.gov.br or www.braziltour.com, is in charge of tourism
in Brazil and has information in many languages.
Embratur
, the Brazilian Institute of Tourism, is at the same address, and is in charge of promoting tourism abroad For information and phone numbers for your country visit www.braziltour.com. Local tourist information bureaux are not usually helpful for information on cheap hotels and it is difficult to get information on neighbouring states. Expensive hotels provide tourist magazines for their guests. Telephone directories (not Rio) contain good street maps.
Other good sources of information are: LATA
, www.lata.org. The Latin American Travel Association, with useful country information and listings of all UK operators specializing in Latin America. Also has up-to-date information on public safety, health, weather, travel costs, economics and politics highlighted for each nation. Wide selection of Latin American maps available, as well as individual travel planning assistance. South American Explorers
, www.samexplo.org. A non-profit educational organization functioning primarily as an information network for South America.
National parksNational parks are run by the Brazilian institute of environmental protection,
Ibama
(
Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e
dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis
), www.ibama.gov.br. National parks are open to visitors, usually with a permit from Ibama. See also the
Ministério do Meio Ambiente
