Children

Travel with children is easy in Brazil. Brazilians love children and they are generally welcome everywhere. Facilities for children are often better than those back home.

Most restaurants provide children's seats and menus as well as crayons and paper to keep them happy. Children are never expected to be seen but not heard, and are allowed to run around pretty much everywhere.

Some hotels charge a cheaper family rate. Some will not charge for children under 5 and most can provide an extra camp bed for a double room. A few of the more romantic boutique beach resorts do not accept children. If you are planning to stay in such a hotel it is best to enquire ahead. Children under 3 generally travel for 10% on internal flights and at 70% until 12 years old. Prices on buses depend on whether the child will occupy a seat or a lap. Laps are free and if there are spare seats after the bus has departed the child can sit there for free.

Transport can involve long waits in rodoviárias (bus stations), but there are usually restaurants and places to sit down. Motion sickness can be treated with Dramin, which comes in dropper bottles (be sure to follow the dose), which is easy to decipher even with little Portuguese. Two glasses of strong maracuajá juice act as a weaker natural substitute.

On tours children under 6 usually go free or it may be possible to bargain a discount rate.
