Aruanã and the Rio Araguaia in Brazil

Any Brazilian will tell you that the 2630-km-long Rio Araguaia is richer in fish than any other in the world, and a visit to the 220-km stretch between Aruanã and the Ilha do Bananal during the fishing season is quite an experience. As the receding waters in May reveal sparkling white beaches, thousands of Brazilian and international enthusiasts pour into the area, intent on getting the best camping spots. As many as 400 tent cities spring up, and vast quantities of fish are hauled in before the phenomenon winds down in September, when the rivers begin to rise again and flood the surrounding plains. Without Brazilian contacts, the best way of experiencing this annual event is with one of the specialist tour operators.

The Araguaia is most readily accessible from the port town of
Aruanã
, 180 km northwest of Goiás Velho by paved highway, which sees little excitement outside the winter fishing season when its comfortable hotels are booked up for months. Boats can be rented to visit some of the beautiful lakes and beaches nearby. Brazilian canoeing championships are also held along the river. The
rodoviária
has bus connections with Araguapaz, Britânia and Goiânia.
