Getting there

Air From North America and Europe

With the exception of neighbouring countries, international services to Belize go through the USA, with American Airlines, Continental, Delta and United. There are no direct flights from Europe. Most flights from Europe go through the US and require an overnight stop in Miami or Houston.

From Central America

There are daily connections to San Salvador with Grupo Tacaand Flores (Guatemala) with Maya Island Air, www.mayaisland air.com, and Tropic Air, www.tropicair.com.

Road

The most commonly used routes are with the Petén Department of Guatemala at Benque Viejo del Carmen and, to the north, at the border with Chetumal on Mexico's Yucután Peninsula. Both immigration offices have been remodelled, reducing the waiting times. A less widely used crossing, for non-vehicular travellers, is at La Unión, where there are immigration facilities.

Sea

Boat services link the south of the country with Honduras and Guatemala. From Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, there is a boat service to Punta Gorda; from Puerto Cortés, Honduras, a boat goes to Placencia, via Mango Creek. Obtain all necessary exit stamps and visas before sailing - see under each town for details.
