Chilean Tierra del Fuego

The Chilean half of Tierra del Fuego is in two sections: the western half of Isla Grande (the main island) and the whole of Isla Navarino, to the south of the main island. Much less developed than the Argentine side of Tierra del Fuego, there are just two small towns where Chile's Fuegians are mostly concentrated: Porvenir on Isla Grande, easily reached by ferry from Punta Arenas, and Puerto Williams on Isla Navarino, which can only be reached by a flight from Punta Arenas. The northern part of Isla Grande is flat steppe, but the south is dominated by the Darwin range of mountains, which provide a dramatic visual backdrop, even if you can't easily get to them. Tourism on Chilean territory is very limited, but it's possible to organize trekking tours from Punta Arenas, and there are plenty of fishing lodges offering magnificent trout fishing, particularly on Río Grande.
