When to go

Argentina is an appealing destination for warm,
sunny holidays in the middle of the northern hemisphere winter though, since the country covers such a vast area, there is somewhere to visit at any time of year. The southern hemisphere summer is from December to March, spring is from mid- September to November, autumn is from March to May and winter from June to August.

Before you look at when to go, start thinking about what you would like to see. Generally speaking, November to April is the best time for travelling to Mendoza, San Juan, Córdoba, Patagonia and Ushuaia. Trekking trails are open and national parks are at their prettiest. For the rest of the country, namely Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, Corrientes and Iguazú Falls, May to October is best as temperatures tend to be cooler, and there is less rain. Exceptions are the marine reserve at Península Valdés, which has different seasons for different animals, and also the ski season at the various resorts, which is from about June to mid-October, depending on the climate.

Buenos Aires city is wonderful any time of year but is at its best in spring and autumn, when the weather is sunny and mild. The city can be hot and humid in the height of summer, with temperatures over 40C and humidity at 80%. If you come in summer, consider spending a night in the delta or on an
estancia
, to cool down.
