Mendoza city

Mendoza is undoubtedly the tourism centre of the west of Argentina, and a good place to spend a few days, with its pretty plazas, wide boulevards and sophisticated nightlife. Its flourishing economy is entirely based around wine, as it is the centre of Argentina's rapidly growing wine industry. Any trip to the city should include a tour of some of the vineyards at Maipú and Luján de Cuyo, to the south of the city. There are large flashy commercial bodegas and smaller family wineries, and after seeing the process of winemaking, you'll be treated to a generous tasting to appreciate why Argentina's wine is receiving such worldwide acclaim. Wine is a part of the city's culture too, in the profusion of wonderful vinotecas where you can taste fine wines, and in the spectacular festival held to celebrate the wine harvest every March in Mendoza's splendid Parque San Martín. The city has some small interesting museums, and a lively nightlife, with sophisticated restaurants serving all kinds of fine food. It's a good place to plan a trip into the mountains to the west, the snow-capped peaks form a dramatic backdrop to the city. You can hire ski gear, get expertise on climbing Aconcagua or find specialist adventure tour operators for climbing or rafting elsewhere in the West. The city is well set up for tourism, with a huge range of comfortable hotels, and plentiful
bilingual tour operators. For more to information, see www.welcometomendoza.com.ar (in English)
