Around the park

There are some delightful walks here, with guides only needed for the longer treks where paths are not marked. (For these, ask in the Junín park office or at San Martín de los Andes, address above.) Yellow arrows indicate the paths; allow plenty of time to return before dark. Ask guardaparquesfor advice on routes before setting off.

Trekking routes

El Saltillo Falls - 2 hrs return, fabulous views.

Termas at Lahuen-Co - It's well worth getting to beautiful Lago Curruhué and the rustic Termas. You could walk it from Lago Paimún: it is eight hours to reach the end of Lago Paimún, walking along the northern side, then four more to reach the Termas, best done over two days. You must consult the book of walks Sendas y Bosquesfor Parque Nacional Lanín, and notify guardaparques. It's a beautiful walk, and you'll be rewarded by a soak in these simple rustic pools.

Base of Volcán Lanín - 8 hrs return. A satisfying walk. Start from Puerto Canoa.

Cerro El Chivo - 2064 m, 8-9 hrs return.A more challenging walk through forest. Note that heavy snow can lie till January. Potentially dangerous without a guide. Consult Sendas y Bosquesbook for Parque Nacional Lanín, and notify guardaparques.

Horse riding

You can explore much of the area on horseback, including the trek to the base of Volcán Lanín. Five places along the lake hire horses: ask guardaparquesfor advice, or ask at the local Mapuche community where you see the signs, cabalgatas(horse rides).

Boat trips

A fantastic boat trip offers the chance to see Lanín and the beautiful surrounding mountainsf rom the water, and to reach the relatively inaccessible Lago Epulafquen with its impressive 6-km lava deposit.
