Working in Argentina
Foreigners can't work in Argentina without a work permit which you'll only get with an official job. At a time of high unemployment, it's hard to find work and you might consider it unfair to take work away from Argentines. The exception to this is teaching English, and it's possible to pick up work with a school, even if you don't have any qualifications. But you will be paid more if you have a TEFL certificate (Teach English as a Foreign
Language) and experience. Otherwise, private
lessons are always an option, but they pay very poorly, currently around US$6 per hr. Jobs in schools are advertised in the English- language newspaper, the
Buenos Aires Herald
; www.craigslist.com, the
South American Explorers
free newsletter, www.saexplorers. org; and in the schools themselves.
EBC
, www.ebc-tefl-course.com, offer a comprehensive 4-week TEFL training course
that is highly recommended. Most graduates
walk away with a job already organized.
If you are intent on trying to obtain a work visa speak to
Immigration
, Antártida Argentina 1365, Buenos Aires, T011-4312 8663. A good level of Spanish is essential.
